Therapeutic Consultation

Therapeutic Behavior Consultation service means professional consultation provided by members of behavior analysis/consultation disciplines that are designed to assist individuals, parents, guardians, family members, and any other providers of support services with implementing the individual support plan. This service utilizes person-centered assessments, development of a therapeutic behavior consultation support plan, and facilitating training to assist family members, caregivers, and other providers in supporting the individual enrolled in the service reach their goal. A therapeutic behavior consultation service support plan is the report of recommendations resulting from a therapeutic behavior consultation that is developed by the professional consultant after they spend time with the individual to determine the individual's needs.

Behavior Consultation Services

At Destination Family Services, we believe behavior is influenced by more than an individual's diagnosis. Communication, environment, relationships, health, and life experiences all play a role in how individuals respond to the world around them.

Our Behavior Consultation services support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who experience behavioral challenges that may affect their safety, independence, relationships, or participation in everyday activities.

Using a person-centered, evidence-informed approach grounded in Positive Behavior Support, our consultants work collaboratively with individuals, families, caregivers, and support teams to understand behaviors of concern, identify contributing factors, and develop practical strategies that promote meaningful, lasting improvements.

Our Approach
Behavior Consultation is about more than reducing challenging behaviors. Our goal is to help individuals develop meaningful skills while strengthening the environments and support systems around them.

Services may include:

  • Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA): Identifying patterns, environmental influences, communication needs, and potential functions of behaviors.

  • Behavior Support Plans (BSP):Developing individualized strategies that emphasize prevention, skill development, positive reinforcement, and supportive environments.

  • Communication & Replacement Skills: Teaching practical ways to express needs, request assistance, manage frustration, navigate transitions, and advocate for personal preferences.

  • Caregiver & Staff Training: Providing coaching and hands-on guidance to families, direct support professionals, and service providers to promote consistent implementation.

  • Environmental & Systems Support: Identifying adjustments to routines, expectations, communication methods, and environments that may reduce behavioral challenges.

  • Progress Monitoring: Reviewing behavioral data, evaluating intervention effectiveness, and adjusting strategies to support continued progress.

Where Services Are Provided

Behavior Consultation may support individuals across a variety of settings, including residential homes, family homes, day support programs, community environments, and other locations where individuals live, work, and participate in daily activities.

Our consultants collaborate with the individual's existing support team to promote consistency, strengthen independence, and ensure behavioral strategies align with the person's Individual Support Plan (ISP) and personal goals.

  • Virginia Family and Individual Supports (FIS) Waiver

“Although I was hesitant about Telehealth services, Mr. Patrick really gave me some great resources to use with my son. I didn’t think I would be able to get support without someone being directly in front of us.”
